Terrazzo Restoration Works – Catford Theatre, London

Project Overview

MGS Restoration Ltd were proud to undertake the complete internal terrazzo restoration package at the historic Catford Theatre, London, as part of the venue’s major £8 million refurbishment programme.

Dating back to 1930 and originally opened by the former Queen of England, Catford Theatre remains one of London’s most recognisable cultural landmarks. The refurbishment project aimed to preserve the building’s historic character while modernising key public and performance areas throughout the theatre.

Our works focused on the restoration and refinishing of more than 800m² of terrazzo flooring, together with bespoke terrazzo casting works and the fabrication and installation of new bar surfaces within the theatre’s main hospitality area.

The project required specialist restoration techniques, careful material matching, and a highly detailed approach to ensure the finished surfaces reflected the quality and heritage of this iconic venue.

The Challenge

As a historic theatre dating back to 1930, the building contained extensive original terrazzo flooring that had experienced decades of heavy public use.

The cement-based terrazzo surfaces throughout the staircases, corridors, and public spaces required extensive refinishing to remove wear, staining, and surface deterioration while preserving the original character of the flooring.

In addition, the project required the formation of two substantial in-situ terrazzo castings, carefully designed to replicate original architectural detailing within the theatre.

The theatre’s main bar area also required restoration and upgrading. The existing resin-based terrazzo flooring had become worn and dull, while the bar tops themselves required complete replacement with a contemporary yet sympathetic finish suitable for a busy hospitality environment.

Because the building remained an important cultural landmark, every aspect of the restoration required a balance between modern performance standards and historic preservation.

The Restoration Process

Cement-Based Terrazzo Refinishing

Our specialist restoration teams carried out full refinishing works across all cement-based terrazzo surfaces throughout the theatre.

Using professional diamond grinding and polishing systems, we removed surface wear, old coatings, and embedded contamination to restore a clean and consistent finish across the building.

Particular attention was paid to preserving the original appearance and texture of the terrazzo while improving durability and overall presentation.

In-Situ Terrazzo Castings

As part of the restoration works, MGS Restoration completed two large in-situ terrazzo castings within the theatre.

These sections were carefully formed and polished on site to replicate the building’s original terrazzo detailing and integrate seamlessly with the surrounding historic flooring.

The castings required precise aggregate selection, colour matching, and finishing techniques to ensure consistency with the original terrazzo surfaces.

Resin-Based Terrazzo Restoration – Main Bar

The theatre’s main bar area featured a resin-based terrazzo floor that had become heavily worn through years of continuous public use.

Our team restored the surface through specialist refinishing and polishing techniques, bringing back depth, clarity, and a refined sheen while improving the durability of the flooring.

The restored terrazzo now complements the refurbished hospitality area while maintaining the character of the original space.

Staircase and Corridor Restoration

Beyond the main public areas, restoration works extended throughout the building’s staircases, corridors, and performer spaces.

Each area required careful preparation, localised repairs, and detailed finishing to ensure consistency across the theatre while respecting the building’s historic fabric.

Bespoke Bar Top Fabrication

Caesarstone Jet Black Installation

As part of the wider refurbishment works, MGS Restoration collaborated closely with our in-house fabrication division to create new bespoke bar tops for the theatre’s hospitality areas.

The new surfaces were manufactured using Caesarstone Jet Black, selected for its durability, contemporary appearance, and suitability for a high-use environment.

Bespoke Bird’s-Beak Edge Detailing

One of the standout features of the installation was the bespoke 20+20mm bird’s-beak edge detail, expertly crafted by our fabrication team.

The sweeping curves and precision finishing demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship and technical expertise applied throughout the project.
