Stone Restoration Works – 93 Mortimer Street, Fitzrovia, London
Project Overview
MGS Restoration Ltd were proud to contribute to the refurbishment of 93 Mortimer Street, a remarkable Grade II listed building in Fitzrovia, London with a history dating back to the 18th century. Over the years the building has served a variety of purposes, including a synagogue, the London Galvanic Hospital, and later the German Athenaeum Club.
In 2025, the building was reimagined by architect Sumayya Vally of Counterspace for the Kamel Lazaar Foundation, transforming it into Ibraaz, a cultural venue dedicated to art, dialogue, and ideas from the global majority.
As part of this important redevelopment, MGS Restoration Ltd were commissioned to undertake specialist stone restoration works within the building. Our work included the refinishing and repair of the main Pentelikon marble staircase, restoration of Grey Marquina marble window cills, and installation of newly sourced matching marble in the main foyer entrance.
The total stone restoration area covered approximately 150m²

The Challenge
Working within a historic Grade II listed building required careful restoration techniques to preserve the original architectural character while meeting modern construction standards.
The Pentelikon marble staircase, an important architectural feature of the building, required refinishing and repair due to wear and age. The Grey Marquina marble window cills also needed restoration to improve their condition and visual consistency.
In addition, new marble needed to be sourced and installed in the main foyer entrance, carefully matched to the existing stonework so that it blended seamlessly with the historic materials.
Maintaining the building’s historical integrity while delivering a high-quality finish for a new cultural venue was a key priority throughout the project.
The Restoration Process
Pentelikon Marble Staircase Restoration
The main marble staircase was carefully assessed before restoration began. Our team carried out refinishing work to restore the natural surface of the Pentelikon marble, improving the overall appearance while preserving the stone’s historic character.
Specialist restoration techniques were used to remove surface wear and refine the marble finish while ensuring the staircase remained consistent with the original design.
Grey Marquina Marble Window Cill Restoration
The Grey Marquina marble window cills were restored to improve their condition and visual appearance. The stone surfaces were carefully refinished and repaired where necessary, ensuring they matched the surrounding architectural features of the building.
Installation of Matching Marble in the Foyer
As part of the refurbishment, new marble was installed in the main foyer entrance. Our team sourced marble that matched the existing stonework and carefully installed it to integrate seamlessly with the surrounding materials.
This ensured the new installation complemented the historic interior while meeting the design requirements of the new cultural space.
