Marble and Terrazzo Restoration – Sunbeam Studio, Ladbroke Hall, London

Project Overview

In October 2018, MGS Restoration Ltd carried out an extensive marble and terrazzo restoration project at Sunbeam Studio, Ladbroke Hall, located at 79 Barlby Road, London W10 6AZ. This impressive Grade II listed building, designed in the Edwardian Baroque style, was originally constructed in 1903 as the headquarters of the Sunbeam Talbot Motor Company, one of Britain’s earliest purpose-built car factories.

The building features large open showroom spaces, elegant office areas, and a beautifully detailed directors’ suite. Today, Ladbroke Hall has been transformed into a vibrant photo and film studio, hosting art exhibitions and creative events.

Our restoration work focused on revitalising the historic stone flooring and staircases throughout the building, including marble restoration in Studio 3 and terrazzo restoration across Studios 1 and 2. The total restoration area covered approximately 529m².

The Challenge

As a historic building dating back to the early 20th century, Ladbroke Hall contained original stone flooring that had experienced decades of wear and damage. Several sections of the marble floor in Studio 3 had broken or deteriorated tiles, while the terrazzo floors and staircases in Studios 1 and 2 showed signs of cracking and historic wear.

Due to the building’s listed status and architectural importance, the restoration required a careful approach to preserve the original character of the stone surfaces while repairing damage and restoring the flooring to a high standard.

The Restoration Process

Marble Floor Restoration – Studio 3

Studio 3 features an impressive white marble floor with a striking black keystone pattern and decorative borders. Our team began by identifying damaged marble tiles and carefully removing them.

Custom-cut marble pieces were produced to match the existing stone, allowing us to replace the damaged sections seamlessly. Once the tiles were installed, the entire marble floor was re-grouted to restore uniformity.

The surface was then diamond cut to remove imperfections and create a perfectly smooth finish before being polished to achieve a refined medium shine.

The Restoration Process

Staircase Restoration

Two internal staircases were also restored as part of the project. Our team carried out diamond cutting to refine the stone surfaces while repairing damaged areas.

New riser sections were installed where required, ensuring the staircases maintained both their structural integrity and historic appearance.

The Restoration Process

Terrazzo Restoration – Studios 1 and 2

Studios 1 and 2 feature stunning terrazzo balcony floors that had suffered significant damage over time. One staircase required major repair due to structural wear and deterioration.

Cracks and historical damage within the terrazzo were repaired using colour-matched resin, carefully blended to match the original stone aggregates. After repairs were completed, the terrazzo floors were diamond cut and polished to restore their smooth and polished finish.
